What you will learn

If you're just getting started on the drum kit or have been playing for fun but want to develop your confidence Drum kit 1 is a great place to start. Develop your basic hand and foot techniques for playing contemporary music styles like pop, rock, jazz and Latin. Suitable for players with a term's experience. Please bring your own drumsticks.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop an Awareness of Timekeeping with and without a click/backing track
  • Further develop your awareness of the basic hand and foot techniques to play the Drum Kit
  • Play and maintain a wider variety of grooves with consistency
  • Identify and apply a selection of basic drumming rudiments
  • Further develop your music reading skills
  • Perform in front of the class

Class format and activities

Follow verbal instructions and practical demonstrations, work and practice as part of the group and individually and Perform in front of the class. Your input and participation in discussions and Q&A sessions is very important

Entry requirements

Term 2 of this course is not suitable for complete beginners; students joining in the spring term are advised to contact the Music Department Office before enrolling. Online enrollment on term 2 of this course, starting in January, is only available to those enrolled in the previous term.If you are a current student you will have received an email alerting you to this. If you are new to this course please select 'Ask a Question' and the curriculum department will contact you.

What you need to know before you enrol

A regular practice routine is essential to keep up with the course and get the most out of it. Due to the nature of the instruments/content of the course you might be exposed to high volume levels. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a pair of ear plugs to every lesson.
