What you will learn

French culture, film, septième art, film, French film, French cinema During the nine weeks we will look at the history of French cinema from the invention of the moving image in 1895 in Lyon through the golden ages of the 30’s, the challenges of the occupation and then on to its rebirth through the New Wave in the sixties followed by the latest trends. This will be heavily illustrated by clips from key films and illustrated notes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand the context form which French films have emerged, their relevance to French history and culture and how they correspond with the rest of world cinema
  • discuss these aspects of films and view French films with an increased appreciation and understanding of their role in world cinema
  • create brilliant conversation at supper with friends

Class format and activities

The class will consist of background history illustrated by extensive clips and discussion of their content. Students will be encouraged to look ahead to see films for themselves and share their own understanding and experiences of French cinema. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. and supportive environment.

An interest in cinema and the ability to read substitles in English.
