What you will learn

In this course you will cover the basics of photography techniques in terms of shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focussing, as well as lenses and composition. The aim of this course is to give you control over your DSLR or mirrorless camera and learn a variety of skills, which will enable you to use the different modes and functions of your camera effectively to achieve creative photographs. You will acquire a practical understanding of how to apply photographic techniques in different situations and achieve well-exposed photographs. As part of the course, you will also be introduced to a number of established photographers and will explore composition and light. Between sessions you will be set tasks, so as to practice the learnt skills. You will discuss your photographs and get feedback from the tutor and peers. At the end of the course you will have the confidence to take well-composed photographs using your camera’s manual mode.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use your camera in shutter speed and aperture priority modes in different situations
  • Use your camera in manual mode and achieve well-exposed photographs in different situations
  • Use camera techniques to achieve the desirable effects in your photographs
  • Use practical skills to produce creative outcomes

Class format and activities

You will learn actively and practice the demonstrated skills during the sessions; you will continuously be supported by the tutor. All course materials (background notes, handouts, etc.) will be available online and accessible via Microsoft Teams that you will have 24-7 access.

The course is suitable for complete beginners, or those who have a basic photographic knowledge and wish to understand their camera better and use it in manual mode
