What you will learn

An ideal course for those new to creative writing or more experienced writers looking to stimulate ideas and workshop material. We will read and discuss great examples of published fiction and poetry, learn about key areas (including character, narrative, dialogue and setting), participate in a range of creative exercises to generate writing, and give and receive feedback on our writing in a supportive environment.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn strategies to generate creative writing and sustain a writing practice
  • Develop confidence in your own creative abilities
  • Learn how to evaluate writing, and give and receive feedback
  • Learn how to edit work for publication

Class format and activities

You will learn through presentation, class discussion, writing exercises and feedback. We will experiment with different techniques.

Entry requirements

This is a beginner's course and no previous experience in creative writing is required., Level 2 literacy in English is needed, as is a willingness to share your writing with others and to explore a range of literature.

What you need to know before you enrol

In addition to in-class activities, you will be provided with weekly writing exercises and extracts to read independently. Access to a computer and printer will be helpful, as you will be expected to type your work up and bring copies to the class.
