What you will learn

This course is designed for experienced quilters and patchwork artists, designers and makers who wish to print, dye and embellish their own fabrics. We welcome back prior Contemporary Quilting students who worked with the course’s original tutor Dani Atkins. The course aims to continue her teaching methodology but with the new twist of tutor Jenny Bell who will bring her own print and dye skills, as a colour specialist and perspective on contemporary quilting and creative practice. The theme for this course (if you choose to follow the tutor brief) is Dysfunctional Quilts. A broad topic that could explore: the dysfunctional nature of the Textiles industry, Quilts that function as art, quilts made from non-traditional materials such as plastics/ paper or recycled cloth, see-through quilts, quilts with hole in or it could be a chance to ‘unpick’ and start again. Personal themes around ‘non’ functional or injustice are also welcome.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Examine your practice through a practical evaluation process
  • Refine print and dye techniques
  • Identify stitch methods that compliment project themes
  • Select colours with a sense of your own style and or in relation to project themes
  • Mix and test print and dye pigments to make nuanced and personal colours
  • Plan for future projects

Class format and activities

Sessions will begin with an introduction to the day from the tutor and students to share intentions. It is expected that students will come to each session with a plan and set of activities and willingness to engage with Morley Textiles studio practice. Some sessions should be used to test ideas through progressive sampling methods and others to confirm/complete. Planning support will be provided by the tutor. Print and dye workshops will be run throughout the course alongside creative & design activities. Jenny is keen to support prior Contemporary Quilting students to use the studio space to continue with their practice.
