There are other versions of this course available. We’ve listed them below and summarized the differences between the one that you are currently viewing.
DATES 16&23 JAN and 6&13 FEB 2021. This course will allow you to get a feel of what it is like to work with clay and glaze and begin to understand it’s potential to make a form. We will look at different types of clay and learn how to shape and mould it using a limited range of techniques. You will have time to experiment with the some options for decorating the clay surface through using clay coloured slip and completing the form with a basic introduction to glazing. There will be a charge for clay work to be glazed and fired. Students work alongside each other in a mutually supportive environment in which you will learn both from your tutor and each other.
If you are a beginner student you will practice and develop skills in some of the basic construction methods and techniques. Each session your tutor will demonstrate new techniques and give guidance on project work, as well as encouraging you to develop your own ideas. Intermediate students will be introduced to more advanced techniques of making and decorating in order to further develop chosen skills through individual project work. You will also be introduced to historical and contemporary approaches. We will have group and individual discussions and a wide range of resources are provided.
No this class is open to complete beginners and also those at intermediate levels.
Some activities eg. wedging clay requires a moderate level of physical fitness - if you have any concerns (back problems, for example) please come and see your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required.
A notebook and pen is useful. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Your tutor will advise you about which tools to purchase. We make a £2 per kilo charge for clay used before the first firing only.
