What you will learn

This qualification is designed to support learners who wish to study Science as a one-year, full-time course, or for those wishing to take it alongside another area of complementary or contrasting study as part of a two-year, full-time study programme. It supports progression to higher education if taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

Class format and activities

The course is made up of a variety of modules that include both practical and assignment-based assessments. There are two externally assessed units that deal with science principles and scientific skills. The approach for the internally assessed units provides opportunities to explore beyond these principles into vocationally linked activities and enables you to receive feedback on your progress throughout the course.

Entry requirements

You will hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs at 4-5 (Cs) or above OR have achieved successfully an appropriate qualification at level 2 qualification. You will be expected to hold 4 or 5 (C) or above in English and Maths. You may be considered (Centre Principal discretion) If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 at GCSE (C), but hold a grade 3 (D) in one subject, English or Maths. You will expected to enrol onto an appropriate English and/or Maths course at GCSE and achieve the qualification in the first year to ensure progression onto the second year of the programme.

What you need

You should arrive to your lessons prepared to learn with pens, pencils and writing pad. All other resources and materials you need will be provided. In the event of teaching moving online, you will need a computer with internet access for online lessons via MS Teams on a daily basis.

What you can do next

If taken as part of a programme of study that includes other BTEC Nationals or A Levels, the course will support progression to higher education. Following successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma you can move on to the 2nd year of the programme and complete the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. This qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses.
