What you will learn

Get better at writing and spelling. Become more confident with reading and writing for work, study and everyday life. This course will develop your understanding of English grammar and give you strategies to improve your spelling. You must be working at Entry 3 to join this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Write sentences that are grammatical and correctly punctuated
  • Identify the different word types that make up sentences including prepositions, pronouns and conjunctions
  • Identify and use prefix and suffix to improve your spelling and vocabulary
  • Identify homonyms and synonyms and use them to improve your writing

Class format and activities

This course is Online plus. You will learn through reading and writing, focusing on grammatical structures and strategies to improve your spelling. You will work on your own, with others in a group and take part in discussions. You will be given regular assignments to complete in class and for homework. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English and be working at Entry Level 3. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are regularly updated on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance is expected from all our students. You will be set regular reading and writing assignments to complete outside class time.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined pad, a ring binder folder for your work, coloured pens and a dictionary.

If you have excellent attendance and successfully complete the course, you may be advised to progress to a Functional Skills English course.
