What you will learn

Learn first hand about the wonderful repertoire, rhythms and harmony of this dynamic music. Suitable for all instrumentalists and percussionists, this study workshop will give you a better understanding of this exciting music and how all the instruments and rhythm section interact to create a dynamic and sophisticated sound so you can experience some of the excitement of playing in a Brazilian Ensemble through online interaction with the tutor. You will explore many beautiful songs written by the great Brazilian composers and learn to play over some of their unconventional harmonies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • You will be introduced to some beautiful repertoire by some of the great Brazilian Bossa Nova composers and learn approaches to playing over some of the unconventional harmonies used in these songs
  • Develop your improvising and rhythmic skills so that you can learn to play this music confidently as well gain insight into how to solo over some Classic Brazilian music styles.
  • You will work on your sight-reading, rhythm, harmony, and arrangement and ensemble playing within the context of the repertoire we are studying.

Class format and activities

You will be playing through some classic Brazilian and Bossa Nova repertoire (some old, some new) by some of the great Brazilian composer/arrangers including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Ben Jor, Joao Gilberto and many more. You will develop your soloing, harmony, rhythmic skills and learn how to play in a Brazilian Ensemble.

Entry requirements

You don't need prior experience of playing Brazilian music but you do need to be at an intermediate level (Grade IV ABRSM or above) on your instrument ideally with a minimum of four year's playing experience to get the most out of the class. It doesn't matter what style of music you have studied/played previously.
