What you will learn

We will explore different ways of making books, including single section pamphlets, concertina books and slit books. We will use printmaking to create visual journeys through the books and experiment with book structure, visual narrative and the visual language of print. This course is suitable for complete beginners and continuing students as all projects are stand alone and are intended to develop creative bookbinding ideas and skillsets.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use bookbinding techniques to make a range of book forms
  • Experiment with simple printmaking techniques to explore visual narrative
  • Learn about different kinds of paper and paper grain
  • Choose the right materials for your book projects
  • Use bookbinding tools with confidence

Class format and activities

There will be demonstration, group discussion, one to one tuition and practical project work. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

No previous knowledge of bookbinding is required. This class is a great introduction to making books.

What you need to know before you enrol

Health and Safety information will be given at the start of the course and in subsequent lessons wherever necessary. The studio is accessible via a lift and there is an adjustable height desk available.

What you need

Pencil, eraser, notebook for taking notes. We will discuss in the first session if there are any other tools and materials you may want to buy.
