It emphasises preparation for recitals and auditions, with a special focus on operatic arias, oratorio, and art songs. Led by repetiteur and vocal coach Panaretos Kyriatzidis, the course also features three drama coaching sessions each term with stage director William Kerley, ensuring a comprehensive approach to performance excellence.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop interpretation and stagecraft skills of solo singing repertoire at advanced level
  • Build up confidence when singing in audition or recital setting
  • Expand knowledge of solo singing repertoire for your voice type
  • Develop collaborative skills with the piano accompanist
  • Improve pronunciation in a variety of languages (Italian, French, German)
  • Develop audition skills such as choice of repertoire and presentation

Class format and activities

In this course, you will be expected to build a portfolio of 3 songs or more that is suitable for your voice type and level and that you can use for auditions and/or concert performance. You are invited to bring along one aria/song of your own choice in the first session. Further choice of repertoire can be decided in consultation with the tutor. The course is in masterclass setting and at the start of each session, participants are allocated equal timeslots to work with the tutor. During each slot, the rest of the group is invited to participate in peer feedback, questions and answers, and occasional group exercises. You will receive regular feedback from tutor, accompanist and peers, alongside advice on further repertoire. Towards the end of the course, we will create video and audio recordings of your work for self-assessment purposes, which may also be used for promotional purposes (subject to approval from the tutor). The last session will take the form of a student recital open to the public, followed by tutor feedback. Technical vocal aspects may be covered at times, although the main focus of this course will be interpretation skills.
