What you will learn

Suitable for those with over two year's playing experience in folk, rock, blues and pop styles (preferably having attended Acoustic Guitar 1 & 2). Learn how to incorporate singing skills to your Finger and Plectrum style playing. This course is a continuation from Acoustic Guitar 2 and therefore requires tutor approval and you are unable to enrol for it online. Please enquire for guidance on how you can get approval.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • A variety of plectrum style picking and strumming patterns to accompany well known songs: - Rhythm and Blues/Soul and Pop styles
  • Develop music and tab reading skills
  • Develop the ability to sing melody and strum/pick rhythm concurrently
  • Develop advanced articulations and use in solos: - hammer, pull off, slides, double stops
  • Barre chords (5th string root major and minor)
  • Scales: - C Mixolydian and D Chromatic Scale

Class format and activities

Listening to tutor explanation and demonstration, group tuition and playing to and with others in the class.

Entry requirements

This course is for those who have two years' experience of acoustic guitar and music reading skills. Ideally you will have completed Acoustic Guitar Songbook: Plectrum Style. Online enrolment on term 3 of this course, starting in April, is only available to those enrolled in the previous term. If you are a current student you will have received an email alerting you to this. If you are new to this course please using the enquiry link and the curriculum department will contact you.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will need to be willing and able to do short, regular practice sessions between classes: at least 10–15 minutes, at least 4 times a week.
