What you will learn

This course is based on the ABRSM syllabus and is suitable for students who want to work towards the ABRSM theory grades 1 and 2 exams.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • read and write pitch using both treble and bass clefs up to two ledger lines
  • understand and clap basic rhythms in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 3/8
  • read and write simple music in major/minor keys up to 3 sharps/flats
  • answer questions from Grade 1 and Grade 2 music theory papers

Class format and activities

Teaching activities include explanations and demonstrations, individual and group tasks (clapping/singing); using worksheets and textbooks, weekly homework, feedback and class discussion.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for absolute beginners in music theory or those who have just started playing an instrument and want to develop their musicianship skills.

What you need to know before you enrol

Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

What you need

Manuscript paper, pencil and eraser, notebook and pen. During the first session, you will receive guidance from your tutor about how to access the online course material, such as recordings and sheet music.
