What you will learn

This course is based on the ABRSM syllabus and is suitable for students who want to work towards the higher ABRSM theory grade exams. This course moves on from Grade 5 to more challenging topics presented in grade 6, particularly focusing on harmonic understanding. The course will be delivered online.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate deep understanding of chords in major and minor keys
  • Understand and use different forms of notation including chord symbols, Roman numerals and figured bass
  • Develop technique for writing four-part harmony
  • Realise harmony according to given figured bass
  • Harmonise a diatonic melody using appropriate chords

Entry requirements

You will need to be confident with ABRSM grade 5. Elementary keyboard skills are essential. It is also advisable to develop aural musicianship skills alongside music theory.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will be expected to complete weekly homework tasks. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

What you need

Pencil and eraser, notebook, manuscript paper. Required Texts: Eric Taylor, The AB Guide to Music Theory, Part 2 Anna Butterworth, Harmony in Practice. To join this class you will need a good internet connection and computer/tablet with webcam and sound.
