What you will learn

Read for fun and also improve your comprehension and writing skills. This course is for students working at Level 1 or Level 2. It is all about learning to love reading and discovering how you can develop your understanding of different types of writing, increase your vocabulary, improve your communication skills and gain knowledge. You’ll be introduced to different types of texts and given the time to discuss and share your ideas.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read a variety of texts with greater understanding
  • Take part in discussions and express your opinions about your reading of a book or short story
  • Use a wider range of vocabulary based on your reading
  • Give a talk on a short story you have read
  • Plan, draft and complete a review of a book or short story you have read

Class format and activities

You will learn through tutor instruction, reading and discussion. You will work on your own and in groups to share ideas and express your opinions. You will be expected to read on your own and in class and also complete written work. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to another course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English and be working at Level 1, Level 2 or above. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to complete homework outside of class time, including researching topics using the internet.

You will need A4 lined paper, a pen, a ring binder folder for your work and a dictionary.
