For experienced students who want to further their skills and develop a personal and contemporary approach to painting, whether figurative or abstract. The course focusses on studio practice, working from your own drawings, photographs, memories or imagination. . You will learn through self-directed painting, individual tutorials, technical demonstrations, lectures, gallery visits and group discussions.
This is primarily a practical course and you will spend a lot of time making artwork and developing your own independent practice. Painting is understood in a broad context and may include elements of drawing, collage, photography, digital images and 3-Dimensional work. Your tutor will help you to develop on-going individual work through one-to-one tutorials and group discussions. There will be group tasks and workshops to explore aspects of painting practice such as drawing and colour mixing, as well as technical demonstrations by your tutor. You will be shown the work of interesting and stimulating artists through books and illustrated lectures. There will also be occasional group visits to galleries
You should be keen to learn, and willing to engage with a wide range of modern and contemporary paintings
This class takes place in C33 which is accessible by stairs and lift. Demonstrations and studio work do not demand a particular level of fitness, and activities can be adapted for individual circumstances where needed
You should bring a sketchbook and notebook to every class. You will need oil or acrylic paint, brushes, palette knife, charcoal, ink, etc. but these will vary depending on the direction your work takes as the course develops. A digital camera and/or smartphone with a camera is essential for documenting work.
