What you will learn

This course introduces the art and technique of glass gilding. From Verre églomisé reverse glass gilding; to the use of size with metal leaves on sculptural work. Students will learn the tools, materials, and methods used in gilding with metal leaves on glass surfaces. From Through practical exercises and projects, participants will develop the skills needed to create stunning gilded reflective glass artworks.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply creative technical skills to produce glass work using metal leaves and engraving mark making processes
  • Be able to produce glass pieces using varying glass types to produce colour, texture, and form.
  • Understand and evaluate the suitability of selected materials within the gilding process.
  • Work independently, safely, and confidently within a glass studio environment.

Class format and activities

You will be working on set tasks and processes guided by your expert glass tutor, Maria Zulueta. Teaching takes place in a practical workshop setting, including both demonstration and discussion. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for students of all levels of experience and is perfect for anyone interested in learning, or further exploring glass techniques.

What you need to know before you enrol

The fee includes tuition, specialist materials, alongside use of specialist equipment, including metal leaves and sizes for gilding. However, Learners will be expected to purchase the glass or other alternative glass types (guidance will be given by the tutor on the first session).

What you need

It would be helpful to bring a sketchbook/notebook, pencils/pen/marker pen etc. You will need to wear sturdy shoes, boots, or trainers (no open sandals); an apron. We have basic tools in the workshop, which have been adapted to facilitate a safe learning environment. Glass and other materials are available for sale to students; however, Learners may want to buy or bring in their own resources to have a wider variety in choice of materials.

With these transferable skills you will have the opportunity to further develop your creative potential and expand your learning within Art and Design studies: we encourage progression onto intermediate and advanced courses, (dependant on ability), within our glass provision at Morley, such as BTEC Level 2 in Glass for example, as well as other courses in Art & Design the college provides.
