What you will learn

The course focuses on developing three specific technical skills: - Barre Chords, Plectrum Skills (combining rhythm and melody) Finger Picking (combining  rhythm and melody). Each of the three areas will be developed through learning 2 well known songs arranged to improve each of the 3 specific technical skills. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Play two songs that have developed three specific technical skills
  • Song 1: - Apply Barre Chords - change between them, grasp their movable characteristics and navigate fretboard
  • Use Plectrum – Expressing rhythm and melody using slides, hammer on and pull off techniques
  • Song 2: - Play Fingerstyle – play Travis picking, using thumb for bass line and fingers for melody
  • Read music and guitar tab 
  • Understand the Roman Numeral chord numbering system
  • Play with confidence in a group, on your own and to backing tracks

Entry requirements

To have ideally completed Acoustic Guitar 2 or have equivalent playing experience at that level. Prior to this course students will have successfully applied barre chords and  now in a position where they are looking to increase their chord library and understand the concept of movable barre chords. Students should have previously played arpeggio style pinch finger picking; have previously attempted left-hand articulations: - hammer, pull off, and slides; and should be able to read guitar tab and rhythm representation (or  willing to engage in additional study to achieve required level).

You will need to be willing and able to do short, regular practice sessions between classes: at least 10–15 minutes, at least 4 times a week.
