What you will learn

The course focuses on developing three specific technical skills: - Strumming, Plectrum Application and Finger Picking. Each of the three areas will be developed through learning 2 songs. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Play 2 songs that have developed three specific technical skills
  • Song 1 technical skill: - Strumming and Plectrum Application – master up and down stroke 16th note rhythms, express precise dynamics and articulate licks using hammer and pull off techniques.
  • Song 2 technical: - Fingerstyle – Apply pima to 8th note rhythm arrangement.
  • Play a selection of chords and successfully change between them
  • Read music and guitar tab
  • Understand chord formula (Major, Minor and extension)
  • Play with confidence in a group, on your own and to backing tracks

Listening to tutor explanation and demonstration  Group tuition and group performance Playing to and with others in the class In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will receive regular feedback in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

To have ideally completed Acoustic Guitar 1 or have equivalent playing experience at that level.  Prior to this course students will have successfully played open major, minor and 7th chords and are currently in a position where they are looking to  increase their chord library. Students should be able to play simple strumming patterns in 4/4 and 3/4 time and have experience of playing a swing groove. Students should have previously played arpeggio style finger picking (pima) Students should be able to read guitar tab and rhythm notation to a basic level.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will need to be willing and able to do short, regular practice sessions between classes: at least 15-20 minutes, at least 4 times a week.
