What you will learn

An opportunity to explore a resist dye method, working with hot wax and using traditional tools to create a variety of patterns, marks and figurative imagery on cloth, with dyes, to create colourful and expressive designs, with this very versatile technique

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Have a working knowledge of traditional and contemporary batik practices
  • Use a variety of tools, including tjantings (pen-like tools for applying hot wax) to draw with wax and to use fabric dyes
  • Create designs on natural fabrics
  • Use the college steamer to fix the colours

Class format and activities

Students will learn through observing tutor demonstration followed by practical experience supported by technical handouts. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience through discussion, show and tell and group critique at the end of the session. The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with students one-to-one and in groups. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for complete beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills and develop their creativity.

What you need to know before you enrol

The textile studio is located in the Nancy Seear block on the second floor accessible by stairs or lift and stair lift combined. If you have any mobility support needs please contact Additional Learning Support on 020 7450 1972 or Art and Design admin on 020 7450 1934 before enrolling.

What you need

It would be helpful to bring a notebook, pencil and apron.
