Those with some experience will develop their ideas and extend their technical and artistic skills in design and stained glass execution.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • design patterns suitable for stained glass leaded lights
  • handle and cut glass confidently
  • cut, shape and solder lead
  • gain a good understanding of how colour and texture of glass can be used to enhance your designs
  • use different techniques in your designs

Class format and activities

This is a practical course and you will learn by creating and designing your own stained glass panels. For beginners, you will learn how to design a pattern, cut glass and lead and build your own panel. You will learn through group demonstrations and with one to one help from the tutor. Once you have finished your first piece of stained glass, you will design a second panel to make during the remainder of the course. For those with some experience, we will look at various contemporary and traditional stained glass panels as a way of inspiring and guiding your designs and techniques. You will explore various ideas and create your own stained glass design in consultation with the teacher, which you will then make throughout the term. There will be lessons on different techniques to help you extend your skills. Throughout the course, the teacher will work with students in groups and on a one-to-one basis.
