What you will learn

Learn voice production, breathing, solo and ensemble singing, harmony, rhythm and interpretation all relevant to singing popular music.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of vocal technique relevant to singing Soul, Pop and Rock
  • Continue to develop confidence in solo singing
  • Develop your expertise of group harmony singing
  • Learn musicianship and aural skills
  • Improvisation
  • Gain an understanding of improvisation through experimentation in class

Class format and activities

Students will build on their vocal confidence, skills and abilities through group and solo singing. We will use a wide variety of popular songs. Different techniques and approaches will be explored in class and students will be given tasks to practise at home.

Entry requirements

No previous experience is necessary - just a desire to sing and a willingness to practise.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will benefit significantly from practising songs and exercises in your own time

What you need

A bottle of still water. A pencil and a folder to keep music. You may find a recording device useful for recording exercises and songs for practice.

What you can do next

There are classes in Jazz Singing and a Jazz Choir. The Kenningtones is a groovy choir which meets on Wednesday evenings in the college.
