What you will learn

Can you play a pop instrument but have not yet taken your first steps towards forming a band? Don’t just play on your own with backing tracks - come and learn how to develop as an band player in a safe and friendly environment. Learn effective techniques to rehearse a range music which you will then perform in a gig.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Improve performance technique and musicianship
  • Advance your ability to collaborate effectively
  • Know rehearsal etiquette
  • Make easy-to-follow charts of songs
  • Transpose songs to an appropriate key for the singer
  • Explore ways of generating and developing musical ideas as a group
  • Develop the technical knowledge required in order to present your ideas effectively in a live performance situation
  • Work as part of a team to establish and work towards a creative goal

Class format and activities

• Listen to tutor presentation, explanation and presentation• Guided analytical listening and group discussion• Work in a dynamic, creative and supportive environment• Learn to plan evaluate songs in lead sheet form• Use recordings from workshops to improve group rehearsal and individual practice techniques• With the aid of the tutor, explore the stylistic boundaries of a chosen genre

Entry requirements

• An open mind when asked to explore different styles within a specific genre• At least 3 years of playing the desired instrument

What you need to know before you enrol
