An opportunity to develop a skills base, exploring a range of silk screen print techniques as well as cold and hot water dyeing, heat transfer, painted and resist methods. Equal emphasis is placed on a broad and open approach to design development. All processes are underpinned by an awareness of the environmental impact of working with cloth, chemicals, energy and water. New students with printing experience are welcome in spring and summer terms but, as the course is progressive, beginners in September are encouraged to commit to all three terms of the academic year.
Beginners will be taught the foundations of print and dye techniques, enabling them to apply colour in to and on to a variety of cloth substrates. Although the class is process based, equal emphasis is placed on design development through personal research and tutor guidance. Experienced students will pursue personal project work using appropriate techniques and materials. Refresher demonstrations are integral to the course.
No previous experience is necessary but a broad and open approach to learning and design development is essential. A degree of manual dexterity, physical stamina and good command of English are also essential.
Printers work standing up. It can be physically demanding. The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access is via a stair lift. Protective clothing, sketch book, A4 folder and A4 plastic sleeves. Further requirements will be discussed as and when necessary.
