What you will learn

For those who have had two years' or more tuition, and play at Grade 2/3 (ABRSM) standard. Taught in the digital piano classroom with one keyboard per student with some work on acoustic piano.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate good posture, hand position and arm movement
  • Know about good warm-up and practice techniques and habits
  • Play scales, arpeggios and exercises in major and minor keys up to three sharps/flats, up to two octaves chromatic scales similar and contrary motion
  • Develop control and sensitivity of touch
  • Acquire some independence and hand finger movement, and apply these to playing melodies, chordal patterns and contrapuntal music
  • Do music reading and writing, including dynamics, articulation and expression markings, and strategies for sight-reading

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for those who have had at least two years’ tuition or equivalent, and are playing confidently at around Grade 2 standard. You will need access to a piano (acoustic or digital) outside class. Willingness to do regular practice sessions between classes: at least 30 minutes, at least 5 times a week.

You will need access to a piano (acoustic or digital) outside class. You will need to do regular practice sessions between classes: at least 30 minutes, at least 5 times a week. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

What you need

Music scores relevant to the lessons and notebook and pencil. Other materials to be supplied by the tutor. Each student should keep a journal where they can record feedback from the tutor and to reflect on their progress both in class and during their own practice out of college. The College provides headphones for all students but you are encouraged to bring your own headphones to the class.
