What you will learn

This course is for students who want to develop and expand their pattern cutting skills and knowledge. You will work with an industry block to practice flat pattern manipulation of darts, gathers, darts into seams, panels, tucks flare and pockets. Students will learn and understand the terminology and fundamentals of pattern cutting. There is also the opportunity to make and construct styles created. You will be developed and equipped to progress onto the City & Guilds Pattern Cutting Level 2

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Work and select appropriate tools and specialist equipment
Adapt a block to produce different shapes styles and pockets
Understand the language and terminology for pattern cutting
Label a pattern with essential information for sampling
Produce a sample constructed from a developed pattern using appropriate pattern cutting techniques

Class format and activities

Mode delivery will be in centre with social distancing. Typical activities will take place in the format of direct teaching with tutor demonstrations, peer discussions, practical skill development and use of examples. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. i.e progression to another course.

Beginners – Very basic pattern cutting knowledge

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Students are generally expected to spend some time outside of class for completion of activities.

What you need

You will need the following equipment: Tape measure, paper and fabric scissors, ruler, pattern master, 3H-4H pencil or technical pencil, fine steel pins, glue stick, magic scotch tape/masking tape, eraser, push-pins, french curves, sewing threads, (1 reel of black and white) A4 ringbinder to store handouts. You will also need to budget approximately £20 - £30 for materials to experiment with.
