What you will learn

Discover the exciting possibilities of printmaking using trace monotype drawing techniques. Explore mark making, offsetting images and how to use simple stencils to create negative and positive shapes. There will be a plant/ flower based still life to draw.

    You will The tutor will lead the session with a demonstration, and furthjer smaller demos during the day. There will be an oppportunity to look at some prints by the tutor and other artists as inspiration, to see what is possible. Teaching is both in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis, with technical and critical advice depending on your needs, and the ideas you want to realise.

    Entry requirements

    No previous experience of printmaking is necessary, but an interest in, or experience of drawing or design could be useful. Or you may have some previous experience and wish to renew and develop your knowledge of this printmaking techniques and learn techniques that the tutor uses in their own work.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Health & Safety information will be given at the start of the course and during the course where necessary. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy, and some may cause irritation in very rare cases. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant or have any sensitivities and they will advise you as to necessary precautions. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

    What you need

    Please bring pencils, a sketchbook or notebook and an image for reference as a starting point. We will cut paper stencils to use but you can bring anything that you would like to use that is thin and flat to use as a stencil- for example thin ribbon or lace, open weave thin fabric/ muslin, flat and dry plant material ( if you are interested in using plants pleaase press them inbetween sheets of newspaper for at least a week prior). It would be advisable to bring your own protective clothing. The course fee includes most studio consumables (basic inks, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for papers, which will be available to buy in the department at cost price.
