  • An overview of the German Art Song repertoire
  • Detailed knowledge of selected works in the genre
  • A better feeling of how your voice suits this repertoire
  • Preparation skills for new pieces
  • Increased practical performing skills

Class format and activities

At the start of each session, students are allocated equal individual time-slots to work on their chosen repertoire with the tutor and the accompanist of the class. Focus of work is on interpretation of the song: relationship between the text and music, between the vocal and piano line, pronunciation of the German language, interpretation of performance markings. The rest of the group participates in peer feedback and questions. There is an end-of-term informal performance of students’ chosen repertoire. The tutor will communicate details about this performance well in advance, and agree with the students which songs they will perform.

Entry requirements

This course is for advanced singers who have completed a few years of vocal training. Entry is via auditions, and this term they take place on Thursday 19th of September between 14:00 and 17:00. Please contact enquiries@morleycollege.ac.uk to arrange an audition, and bring along any German Art Song (Lied) of your choice, to perform preferably from memory. There will be an accompanist present.
