What you will learn

Explore the vast range of ring design possibilities afforded by waxcarving in this course concentrating specifically on rings. Students may bring their own ideas or explore the two set projects with an award-winning master craftsman. The two set projects are the Edwardian classic Bombe ring and the perennially popular Signet, discover their history, learn how to create them and use both as the starting point for your own unique take on each. Carve your designs in wax and finish them in the metal of your choice. Examples will be shown by the tutor.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Plan your ring and transfer design from paper to wax
Form each ring style by sizing, shaping and hollowing wax tube
Bring your own unique style to each ring
Finish your cast pieces.

Class format and activities

The course will progress as follows- 1] history of signet ring. Design, mark out, size and begin carving. 2] continue carving and develop into a unique design and finish wax to a good standard. Send to cast. 3] clean and finish cast ring. 4] history of bombe ring. Design, mark out, size and begin carving. 5] continue carving and develop into a unique design and finish wax to a good standard. Send to cast 6] clean and finish cast ring. In both week 2 and 5, you may opt to forgo the casting process and continue to concentrate on their design the following week in wax and make their own arrangements for casting with recommended companies.

Entry requirements

No experience necessary. All tools and wax provided. You will need to cover the cost of your casting should you wish to proceed with your design.

Bring pen, pencil, paper, and creativity. An apron is also useful.
