What you will learn

Extend your jewellery making skills by learning how to make a variety of common settings: Marquise mount with corner claws. Heart shaped rub-over/cut-down. Four claw round basket. Step by step demonstrations of making 3 separate mounts, followed by practical application with close support from the tutor. Intermediate Level. This is not a setting class, these settings are covered in an Introduction to Stone Setting and Further Adventures in Stone Setting.

Class format and activities

We will look at and discuss examples of stones and settings. You will learn how to plan and construct several of the most common settings. Demonstrations will be given to the group and backed up by help on a one to one basis, There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group crit.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for students who have studied jewellery making and are of a good Intermediate/ Advanced Level. You must have good soldering skills.

What you need to know before you enrol

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness and arm strength to be able to form metal.

What you need

All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals, paper, acrylics, enamel etc. There are some items you will need to purchase yourself such as precious metals (silver and gold), stones, saw blades and specific sized drill bits. Your tutor will help you assess your metal requirements for each project and provide a list of suppliers. Some silver will be available to buy from your tutor should you wish to use it. Please bring: an apron, a small hard back notebook & a fine permanent pen Please wear suitable footwear.
