What you will learn

Learn this ancient Korean technique of fusing 24ct gold foil onto silver. You will learn how to prepare your silver, apply the gold foil and introduce textures to create a gold and silver piece of jewellery. Intermediate level.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • How to apply gold foil and various metal leafs onto finished or semi finished jewellery pieces without the use of solder
  • Texturing using the rolling mill
  • To complete a pair of earrings using Keum Boo or guilding techniques
  • To use simple Cold Connections
  • To work in a group within Health and Safety considerations

Class format and activities

This is a one day practical course., You will learn how to clean and prepare silver sheet, cut pure gold foil and apply the gold foil shapes to the silver sheet using heat and friction., The keumboo sheet will then be textured. You will then cut the sheet into shapes to make a pair of earrings and or pendant., We will discuss various cold connection techniques which can be used with the keumboo to make a variety of jewellery pieces.

Entry requirements

Previous experience in this technique is not necessary however familiarity with the jewellery studio environment and the use of hand tools will be beneficial.

What you need to know before you enrol

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. , Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. , Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.

What you need

• Apron, notebook, and pen• Small sharp scissors and a craft knife• Fine tipped tweezers• Any material for texturing, feathers, fabrics, dry leaves, textured papers for instance• If you wish to work in silver, then please bring 5cm x 8cm of 0.6mm thick sheet silver and any sheet silver that you may already have.
