Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn to play several jazz standards and play with confidence with and without backing tracks
  • Start to build a repertoire of tunes
  • Use analytical and theoretical approaches to improvisation including the study of modes, chord/scale theory, chord sequences and modulation
  • Use effective personal practice strategies
  • To be a proactive learner using resources such as publications,Youtube and online sites to extrapolate the material presented in the course

Class format and activities

Play jazz standards and exploring ways to learn the melody and structure in order to expand repertoire. Use analytical methods to explore approaches to improvising. This term we will cover concepts including: The major scale-structure, harmonisation and improvisation strategies The cycle of 4ths and 5ths An introduction to the modes of the major scale and their application An introduction to the use of the harmonic minor scale Pentatonic and blues scales Chord/scale theory practice strategies.

Entry requirements

Students should have a basic technical competence on their instrument and a basic knowledge of music theory. They will need to be proactive in their study and practice, and be punctual in the online classes.
