What you will learn

Learn jazz styles and numbers, and relate your singing to a basic understanding of jazz harmony. This course is suitable for those who can already sing with some confidence, but with no previous jazz experience. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced- level course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • recognise and undestand the basic structure of the blues
  • interpret jazz standards in various styles
  • use some basic strategies to improvise and scat over jazz standard songs
  • use some strategies to improve your interplay with other musicians
  • use basic performace techniques

Class format and activities

Vocal warm ups Learning blues and jazz repertoire Improvising exercises Listening and discussion. Assessments will be made based on student's performance during the sessions.

Entry requirements

The ability to sing in tune and in time. An appreciation and love of jazz.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires regular practice (including listening) outside of class time.

What you need

Checking class online platform regularly to always be updated about the contents of the lessons and follow any instruction. Occasionally you will need to print your charts and lyrics.
