What you will learn

Gain the confidence and skills to write effectively, read with greater fluency and understanding and express your ideas and opinions in formal settings. You will work towards achieving a Level 2 Functional Skills English qualification.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Take part in discussions on topical subjects, speaking clearly and presenting your views
  • Research a topical subject and present your ideas and opinions to an audience
  • Use a range of reading skills in order to identify the main purpose of a variety of texts e.g. persuasive and descriptive
  • Identify and explain a range of language techniques e.g. metaphors, simile, personification and rhetorical questions
  • Spell, use grammar, punctuation and sentence structure correctly in your writing
  • Plan, draft, write and proofread different texts using the appropriate layout, spelling, punctuation and grammar

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in English [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

This course is in centre. You will work on reading, writing, speaking and listening, developing techniques to check and correct your work. You will learn through tutor instruction, discussion, group work, independent study and individual presentations. You will be given regular homework assignments in reading and writing. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at Level 2 Functional Skills English. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English. You need to have passed Level 1 Functional Skills English or you may have had a disrupted education in an English-speaking country. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to complete homework outside of class time, including researching topics using the internet.

What you need

As this course is online, you must have a reliable internet connection and a computer or laptop. You will also need A4 lined paper, a pen, a ring binder folder for your work and a dictionary.

If you have excellent attendance and pass Level 2 Functional Skills English, you may be advised to progress to a GCSE English course.
