What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Read and evaluate a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including fiction and literary non-fiction.
- Use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve your own writing
- Write using Standard English appropriately and use grammar and punctuation accurately
- Communicate clearly and effectively in standard spoken Standard English
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: GCSE (9-1) in English Language [AQA]
Class format and activities
This class will take place in centre. The class will be interactive and creative. In the class you will work individually, in pairs, or small groups. You will be expected to complete regular homework. We will use MS Teams to post additional resources and you will need a device to access these from. You will also receive regular supportive feedback from your teacher. Achievement on your course will be measured by final examinations and a speaking and listening assessment. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course, including mock examinations. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. We make sure that the content of the course reflects the diverse nature of our student body and we theme lessons around Black History Month, LGBTQIA+ Month and Women's History Month. We also aim to enrich the course with cultural visits and visits from external speakers, to which all learners are welcome to attend.
Entry requirements
This is an accredited Level 2 GCSE course. You should have native or near-native English language skills and you should already be reading English fiction and non-fiction. You will need to do an initial pre-course assessment before being accepted onto this course. Those who do not yet have the required skills will be referred to Functional Skills courses.
What you need to know before you enrol
Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. You will also need to make time to complete work outside the classroom. It is also essential to immerse yourself in the English language and start reading every day in preparation for course. Practising written English by keeping a journal can also be extremely helpful.
What you need
You will need a pen, paper and folder for assignments and any other appropriate stationery. You will be expected to maintain a course folder of handouts and your assignments. We will post additional resources on MS Teams, so it is useful to have an internet connection at home and a device from which you can access online resources..
What you can do next
English Language GCSE is usually an entry requirement for higher level courses such as Access to Higher Education programmes, vocational qualifications and university entrance. It is also an essential qualification for many jobs.
