What you will learn

With a range of popular films and TV shows highlighting the Georgian and Regency Era, we have decided to make that the focus of this year’s historical costuming courses. The success of any historical silhouette, whether on screen, in the ballroom, or on the catwalk, depends on its foundations. In this course, you will learn to create side hoops, also known as panniers, to achieve the distinctive silhouette associated with Georgian fashion. You will learn valuable costuming skills and be guided through a variety of practical techniques with specialist methods and materials to recreate these period understructures. You will be introduced to a selection of different shapes and styles before choosing one to make depending on the specific decade of the 18th Century that you are interested in. The relevance of these types of understructures resonates to this day from couture to cosplay and you will be able to use the transferrable skills sets learned on this course to a wide variety of outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Gather and evaluate historical research to develop Georgian silhouettes or contemporary adaptations
  • Understand how a variety of Georgian understructures influence silhouette
  • Apply techniques to make a set of Georgian Side Hoops
  • Correctly use the diverse terminology and vocabulary of Georgian costume
  • Have a deeper understanding of the lived past

Class format and activities

Mode of delivery: In-Centre . Activities: Teaching is both as a whole class and on an individual one to one basis, using lectures, demonstrations, examples, samples, handouts and any other support materials where appropriate. Assessment methods: Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the above learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, i.e. progression to an intermediate level course. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. Attendance and punctuality is crucial. You will not achieve the desired learning outcomes if you cannot attend fully. You must inform your tutor for the reasons of any lateness or absences.
