What you will learn

This course is specially designed to combine fitness training with the pleasure of dance. You will learn simple patterns of dance movement that help you to develop flexibility, co-ordination, strength and stamina. Further enhance your development of fitness through the practise of floor-based stretching and strengthening exercises drawing from yoga and Pilates. Using a range of music from soul, to folk, classical, country, jazz and RnB, Dance Stretch is a fun and accessible course for all those who like to dance to get fit! Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • have increased your flexibility
  • have improved the rhythmical flow of your dance action
  • have gained better control of your body
  • have developed your strength and stamina
  • constructively assess and evaluate your skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to dance

Class format and activities

The typical class format will include the following: the practise of four short sequences which we return to each week designed to improve flexibility, strength, stamina and coordination; travelling across the floor so as to develop the ability to adapt to new dance material each week set to differing musical styles; floor/mat-based flexibility and strength-enhancing exercises; the practise of an extended set-sequence to present to each other in groups at the end of the course. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students. In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning

This practical class is open to all.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course will include some completion of activities outside of class time, e.g. preparation of favorite stretch exercises to share with fellow students You will be learning and practising physical exercises to help you improve co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina across the duration of 1.5 hours. Therefore, you should be able to sustain this practice. If you need to modify exercises for any reason, that will be fine. Please just speak to your tutor. Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, have any serious health conditions or a history of injury. Please inform your tutor if there is any physical activity you have be advised to avoid. Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.
