This 2 day course offers an opportunity to make work in both textiles and ceramics with an emphasis on printed and embossed pattern and decoration. The approach will interest students who are curious about exploring surface decoration across disciplines. On day 1 you will be based in the Textiles studios making frottage prints from textured surfaces on paper and fabric and small scale repeat patterns using rubber stamps. You will also prepare small plaster blocks for using on day 2. On the second day you will take your ideas over to the Ceramics workshop to carve small plaster blocks for embossing and stamping clay. You will also explore a technique for making slip cast drawings from low relief moulds. At the end of the course you will have a collection of paper, fabric and ceramic tests and samples that you can develop further within subsequent projects in both textiles and ceramics. Students work alongside each other in a mutually supportive environment in which you will learn both from your tutor and each other.
This is a practical class and will include a range of activities, led by your tutor. Demonstrations, slideshows, individual and group discussions will all be part of the sessions. Your tutor will provide a range of inspirational resources.
This course is open to students at all levels of experience
Some activities eg. wedging clay requires a moderate level of physical fitness - if you have any concerns (back problems, for example) please come and see your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required.
A notebook and pen is useful. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Your tutor will advise you about any materials you may need. We make a £2 per kilo charge for clay used before the first firing only.
