What you will learn

Exciting, engaging, challenging and rewarding. Acting: Intermediate will help you to understand acting, how and why it works, how and why it can go wrong; enabling you to develop into a confident and creative, focused performer. It will give you the skills to bring a character to life. The fundamental skills for text work. The ability to command a space on your own. Imagination, character creation, immersive improvisation, poetry and monologue work will all be covered. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand and apply a key set of acting tools & techniques
  • Identify and speak verse with understanding of language and context
  • Make 'in the moment' and character-informed choices during a scene
  • Understand & apply techniques to evaluate performance
  • Work compassionately, creatively and collectively with a group
  • Self direct and be directed a short Shakespeare scene to performance readiness

Class format and activities

In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students.

Entry requirements

Students should have completed an introduction to acting or similar course or had some previous experience. Students must be willing to work creatively and co-operatively with others and have basic sight reading skills.

What you need to know before you enrol

A general level of fitness, as there will be some experience of physical theatre techniques. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course will include some completion of activities outside of class time, e.g. preparation of favourite exercises to share with fellow students.
