This course is about putting theory into practice at the keyboard. Gain a greater understanding of harmony, and learn to use chord shapes in a practical context. You will learn standard chord progressions and learn to harmonise melodies in major and minor keys.
Each student will have their own keyboard with headphones. The classes will consist of instruction and demonstration, as well as individual practice time and feedback. There will also be some group playing and discussion. Topics covered include: Improving knowledge of scales and chords in major and minor keys Developing fluency and confidence with playing chords in different positions Learning voice-leading concepts and putting them into practice Harmonizing melodies in major and minor keys Transposing material to keys up to three sharps/flats
?You will need to have elementary keyboard skills (1-2 years) and knowledge of music theory at Grades 2-3
You will need to have access to a keyboard or piano outside of the class to practice between lessons.
Bring a notebook, pencil, eraser, and manuscript paper for music notation. The tutor will advise on any additional texts. Other materials will be supplied by the tutor.
