What you will learn

If you have completed Entry Level 3 Functional Skills Maths or you are not quite ready for Level 1, this course is designed to help you build confidence and improve your maths skills. You will practise adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole and decimal numbers, as well as working with fractions, decimals, and percentages in real-life situations. This course is not accredited, but it will prepare you for further study in Functional Skills Maths.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers with and without a calculator.
  • Compare and order decimal numbers up to three decimal places.
  • Work out fraction and percentage parts of quantities.

Class format and activities

You will have one lesson per week, where you will learn through a mix of tutor-led activities, discussions, and independent work. The sessions will be engaging, with a focus on real-life maths that you can use every day. The lessons will be practical, making maths relevant to your everyday life so you can apply what you learn in real situations. You will strengthen your skills in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole and decimal numbers, as well as working with fractions, decimals, and percentages in ways that are useful for budgeting, shopping, work, and daily problem-solving. You will also need to complete compulsory homework to reinforce your learning. Your tutor will track your progress through ongoing assessments, and at the start of the course, you will have the opportunity to set personal learning targets.

Entry requirements

To join this course, you should have maths skills at Entry Level 3 or equivalent, along with English/ESOL skills at the same level. All new students must take an assessment before enrolling. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website. If you are progressing from Functional Skills Entry Level 3, you may be invited to join based on your attendance and homework completion from the previous academic year.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course runs once a week, and you are expected to attend every session. You must maintain at least 90% attendance and be on time for all lessons. To get the most out of this course, you will need to set aside at least three hours per week for homework and additional study outside of class. This will help you practise your skills and prepare for progression.

What you need

You will need a calculator, writing materials, a notebook, and a geometry set to complete your work in class. To complete homework and reinforce your learning, you must have access to a computer or tablet connected to the internet. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing all assignments, so it is important to have a device that allows you to work efficiently on your maths tasks.

What you can do next

If you successfully complete this course, you may be able to progress to the the Functional Skills Maths Level 1 programme in September 2025. Your tutor will assess your progress at the end of the term and advise you on the best next step. This decision will be based on your attendance, homework completion, assessment results, and progress towards your learning targets.
