Explore jazz standards in a practical course, learning to improvise on chord sequences and developing repertoire and confidence to perform publicly. Players need basic competence on their instrument, music reading and knowledge of chord structures. Please note that this is the third term of a three terms course. You will need tutor approval to join the class.
Play jazz standards and exploring ways to learn the melody and structure in order to expand repertoire. Use analytical methods to explore approaches to improvising. This term we will cover concepts including: The major scale-structure, harmonisation and improvisation strategies The cycle of 4ths and 5ths An introduction to the modes of the major scale and their application An introduction to the use of the harmonic minor scale Pentatonic and blues scales Chord/scale theory practice strategies.
Students should have a basic technical competence on their instrument. Students should have a basic knowledge of music theory and notation. Students should show a commitment to the course in terms of practice, punctuality, and willingness to work in the supportive environment of the class. This is an entry level term which replaces Jazz Workshop 1A which for various reasons did not happen this academic year.

Personal instrument, except for piano which is provided. Manuscript paper, notebook and writing materials.
