What you will learn

This is a workshop for poets who are getting published, or sending out work. Each week set reading, themes, forms and styles inspire you to write new work, or redraft old poems. You will receive weekly peer and tutor feedback. Student writing regularly gets published.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Shape and edit your poems more critically.
  • Critique others' work more effectively.
  • Be more confident when using poetic form, craft and techniques.
  • Have greater awareness of the range of contemporary poetry.
  • Write poems to submit for publication.

Class format and activities

Each week each poet will have at least one poem workshopped by the class. We will also discuss the weekly themes, styles, forms and set reading. You will be inspired to write a poem each week, or to redraft an old one, in response to suggested, optional themes, styles and forms and weekly reading of contemporary poetry, as well as a range of prompts. You will have the opportunity to share your poetry for peer and tutor feedback in a safe space. You will develop skills in editing and redrafting and giving constructive critical responses to others’ writing. You will develop several poems to submit for publication.

Entry requirements

A good standard of written English and familiarity with reading and writing contemporary poetry.
