What you will learn

This 5-week course is designed for those who would like to experiment with surface techniques, such as using coloured slips to create sgraffito or inlay designs, using different tools and stamps to create texture, using handmade stencils and underglaze transfers to achieve various finishes, including the use of a saggar to create reduction effects. ?

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the differences between clays and why you would use them, how the clay will affect the surface design.??
  • Understand basic ceramic technical language.?
  • Workshop health and safety and guidance on pottery tools.?
  • Experiment with?saggar firings using various combustibles. ?

Class format and activities

Demonstration, Q&A and guidance by tutor both individual and group these are practical hands-on sessions to develop your understanding of clay.??

Entry requirements

We welcome anyone on this course but it will help having some experience with clay.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students, you need to be able to attend all ?sessions to get the most out of this course. We make a £3 per kilo charge for clay, which includes the bisque and glaze firing. The ceramics studio is on the 3rd floor and there is lift access.?

What you need

Pen and notebook, clothes you do not mind getting dirty, closed toe shoes. Please bring any clay tools you have, however, there will be pottery tools available to use on the course, there are also beginners packs to buy at the college if you would like your own.??
