What you will learn

Suitable for players at around Grade 5 standard or above. You will develop ensemble skills and musicianship. Students can join in any term.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate improved technique in your playing
  • Demonstrate improved ensemble skills: playing in tune and in time with others, sight-reading, rehearsal technique
  • Understand and apply historically informed performance practice, including specialised playing techniques, in different styles of music

Class format and activities

Whole class rehearsal, with attention to individual parts as well as the overall texture Playing in smaller consorts, with one or two players per part Discussing and applying different styles and techniques of playing You will need to follow and contribute to discussions in English. Music Study can include the use of digital resources such as listening to recordings, watching videos online, using appropriate mobile applications and following Moodle -Morley's virtual learning environment- to enhance your learning inside and outside the classroom. Music study also offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to enhance wellbeing. Music practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment including developing creativity, developing high-concentration levels, building self-confidence, working to deadlines, being able to control nerves and working as part of a team.

Entry requirements

You will need to be playing at around Grade 5 (ABRSM) standard or above, and able to play at least two sizes of recorder confidently. Confident music reading skills, including some ability to sight read.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will be expected to practise your own parts outside class time. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

What you need

Your recorder(s), pencil and eraser. You may also wish to bring music for repertoire you would like learn. Other music will be supplied by the tutor.
