What you will learn

Get better at reading and writing and gain the confidence to progress to the next level. This course is for students who have completed Level 1 Functional Skills English, but need more time to further develop their skills before progressing to Level 2. Students may complete one or more terms at Aim for Level 2 before moving towards taking the Level 2 exams in the next academic year.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read and identify the main purpose and features in a range of texts
  • Plan, draft and write different types of texts e.g. formal letters, emails and articles
  • Use presentation features to help with reading and to identify main points
  • Recognise a variety of persuasive language techniques

Class format and activities

You will work on your own and in groups, discussing and sharing ideas. You will study topical subjects, researching items online. You will read a wide range of texts and analyse how they are constructed. You will use different techniques to improve and develop your own writing, adapting it for different purposes. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to the Level 2 Functional Skills English course

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English. You will have successfully completed a Level 1 Functional Skills English course or be working towards Level 2. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are regularly updated on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires significant study outside of class time and you will be required to research topics on the internet and produce longer pieces of writing.

What you need

You will need a dictionary, a notebook, pen, highlighters and a folder for your class notes.

What you can do next

If you have excellent attendance and successfully complete term 2, you may be advised to progress to term 3 of the Aim for Level 2 English class.
