This supportive course in masterclass style is for those who wish to develop their voice further and gain performance abilities and experience, using classical vocal technique.
Each session begins with a range of vocal warm ups and exercises. For the main part of the session, the tutor works individually with each student on their chosen song, focusing on a selection of aspects of performance (such as musical and textual precision, expression and interpretation of the performance instructions, pronunciation of the text etc) with the rest of the group observing and offering peer feedback. There are opportunities to ask questions. There is an end-of-term informal performance of students’ chosen repertoire. The tutor will communicate details about this performance well in advance, and agree with the students which songs they will perform.
This course is for singers at intermediate level, therefore basic vocal technique is required. Familiarity with music notation is especially useful, although not essential.
Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.
You will need three copies of your chosen songs (one for the tutor, one for the accompanist, and one for yourself), and any preferred personal equipment for taking notes on your progress and further goals, eg. a recording device such as your smartphone, or a notepad and pen
