What you will learn

Suitable for beginners, this course focuses on the grassroots skills developed in term 1. If you are joining the course this term, please see below for what previous experience may be required.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply the chords A, C, E, F, G, Am, Dm and Em to two well-known songs
  • Play the C major and A natural minor scales
  • Play a melody using the C major scale
  • Play a guitar riff
  • Understand how to read guitar tab
  • Read the notes on the stave and understand the musical alphabet
  • Use a plectrum to strum and pick single notes
  • Apply 'clasp' style fingerpicking
  • Play with confidence in a group, or on your own and to backing tracks

Class format and activities

Listening to tutor explanation and demonstration. Group tuition and group performance. Playing to and with others in the class. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will receive regular feedback in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

To have ideally completed term 1 of Acoustic Guitar 1. Prior to this course students will have successfully played open major chords G, C, D and Em. Students should be able to play simple strumming patterns in 4/4. Students should be able to read guitar tab and rhythm notation to a basic level.

What you need to know before you enrol

You will need to be willing and able to do short, regular practice sessions between classes: at least 10-15 minutes, at least 4 times a week.
