What you will learn

Gain the confidence and skills to write effective formal emails and letters that get you the results you want. On this course you will develop a greater understanding of English grammar rules and how to apply them to become better skilled at expressing yourself in writing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply advanced grammar knowledge to enhance writing.
  • Make use of descriptive language, figurative language and appropriate vocabulary to enhance writing style and tone.
  • Utilise grammar conventions and writing techniques to adapt writing to different purposes, genres and audiences.
  • Analyse and evaluate grammar usage in authentic texts to develop critical thinking and language awareness.

Class format and activities

You will learn through reading and writing, focusing on grammatical structures used in texts. You will work on your own, with others in a group and take part in discussions. You will be given regular assignments to complete in class and for homework. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to another course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English and be working at Level 2 or above. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to complete homework outside of class time, including researching topics using the internet.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined writing pad with margin, pen, pencil, coloured highlighters, a dictionary and a ring binder folder in which to keep your work.

If you have excellent attendance and successfully complete the course, you may be advised to progress to an advanced-level course.
