What you will learn

Do you have an idea that could help solve a societal problem? Are you wondering if starting a social enterprise is the best way to go forward? You are thinking about becoming a social entrepreneur! In this course, you’ll critically examine what makes for a good idea, and whether that idea requires starting a new business. You’ll craft a personal immersion plan while considering different ways to create impact. Students in this course will gain knowledge about social entrepreneurs and how they are creating solutions to address societal problems, learn how to develop creative solutions to address social problems, and empower you to see social entrepreneurship as a force for social change. The course is designed for you if you want to gain valuable tools to prepare you to make an impact on the lives of others.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Introduction to social entrepreneurship
  • Identify what a Social Issue is – and discover how the different types that affect our societies can be helped through business
  • You will learn the difference between a Social Enterprise, a Charity and a traditional business model
  • Creating social change: The social value proposition and identifying a social business opportunity
  • Recognise the challenges and opportunities for the development of social enterprises

Class format and activities

The teaching methods for this course include, Individual or group activity on a topic area of interest to the students on social change, weekly discussion and reflection questions on readings, mini cases and videos about a social entrepreneur, weekly shared student journal/discussion (blog or other user friendly online tool) to share with peers.
